Ep. 22 with Composer & Songwriter, Mimi O'Bonsawin

On Episode 22, I sit down with Canadian contemporary roots singer-songwriter Mimi O’Bonsawin, who just released her latest album, Willow, in March, 2023. Through her rhythm and story-driven songs, Mimi embraces the beauty of the land, all the while yielding to her Franco-Ontarian and Abenaki roots. The ethereal quality of her music whisks you away with uplifting melodies and introspective lyrics that weave pop sensibilities with acoustic instruments. The layers of percussion and surprising harmonies make you feel the music rather than just hear it.
Mimi also runs professional development sessions for teachers, virtual musical engagements with students in French and English as well as hosted several virtual Music writing workshops for students throughout Canada for National Indigenous History month.

On this episode we discuss:

  • Her songwriting, recording, and touring process with partner, Ryan Schurman.

  • Where she draws inspiration from for her lyrics.

  • Her love for gardening and the importance of cultivating home-grown foods.

  • The songwriting workshops she hosts for students around the country.

  • Her upcoming shows for the Willow Tour including:

    • March 31st at The Robert McLaughlin Gallery (Oshawa, ON)

    • April 1st at The Old Church Theatre (Trenton, ON)

    • April 19 at Shenkman Arts Centre (Orleans, ON)

    • April 22nd at Small World Music Centre (Toronto, ON)
